A wedding photographer's portfolio shows you their best twenty images from several years of work. That is not dishonest — everyone does it — but it tells you almost nothing about what your wedding will look like afterwards.

About the work itself
Can we see one complete wedding, start to finish?
This is the single most useful question, and the one most people never ask. A highlight reel proves someone can take twenty good photographs. A full set proves they can hold quality across fourteen hours, through bad light, crowded rooms and the parts of the day nobody plans for.
If a photographer cannot show you one complete wedding, ask yourself why.
Was this shot by the person who will shoot mine?
Larger studios often have several photographers of varying experience. The portfolio may be the founder's work; the person at your wedding may not be. Ask who is coming, and ask to see their work specifically.
How would you describe your style?
Candid, traditional, or a mix. There is no better answer, only the one that matches what you want. If you want posed family portraits and they shoot pure documentary, you will both be disappointed on the day.
About the day
How many photographers and videographers will be there?
For a wedding of any size, one person cannot cover the mandap and the entrance at the same moment. Ask how many people are coming and what each will be doing.
What happens if you fall ill?
Every serious professional has an answer to this. It is usually a named backup they work with regularly. Someone who has not thought about it is telling you how they run their business.
How many hours, and what happens if we run over?
Weddings run late. Almost all of them. Find out whether that costs extra and how much, before it is eleven at night and you are negotiating.
Have you worked at our venue before?
Not essential, but useful. A photographer who knows the space knows where the light is at seven in the evening and where the family photographs work best.
About what you get afterwards
How many edited photographs, and by when?
Get both numbers. "A few hundred" and "a couple of months" are not commitments. A specific count and a specific date are.
Do we get the unedited files?
Many photographers do not give these out, and that is a legitimate professional position. What matters is that you know before you book, not after.
What is included — album, prints, video, drone?
Ask what the quoted price actually contains and what is extra. Albums in particular are often a separate line, and a good one is not cheap.
How are the photographs delivered, and how long do you keep them?
Online gallery, drive, or physical media. And ask how long they keep the originals after delivery, because a hard drive failure two years from now is a real thing that happens to real couples.
Can we see the contract?
Every one of the answers above should be in it. A booking with no written contract is a conversation you will not be able to prove.
Two things to watch for
A price with no detail behind it. A quote that is just a number cannot be compared with anything. Ask for what is included, in writing, and then compare like with like.
Reluctance to show a full wedding. It is the easiest request in the world to satisfy for someone who has the work. Hesitation is information.
And one for you
Before you meet anybody, decide what you actually want from the photographs. Family portraits everyone is in? Candid moments of the day as it happened? A cinematic film to send to relatives abroad?
Photographers are good at different things. Knowing which one you are hiring for makes every conversation above shorter and every quote easier to judge.
